National Leprosy Eradication Programme

At the fag end of Nineteenth Century, Leprosy was one of the burning public Health Problem in and around the Arambagh Sub-division in West Bengal. It was an uncovered area for a long time. This programme has been launched since July’2001 under direct supervision and guidance of State & Dist. Leprosy society, in collaboration with German Leprosy Relief Association, in the allotted areas of Goghat-I & II Blocks, Arambagh Block, and Arambagh Municipality. The programme was envisaged with general survey, early case detection, diagnosis and MDT treatment, retrieval of the defaulter, interpersonal IEC, Group IEC. As the scenario of the Leprosy programme has been changed since 2005, The role of NGO has also since been changed. Passive case detection and referral service to the PHC for diagnosis and treatment, Interpersonal IEC, Group IEC/ACSM, Surveillance, Contact Survey, POID/DPMR Management, SER/CBR activity etc. are being taken up by us in the areas of Goghat-I & II Blocks, Part of Arambagh Block, and Arambagh Municipality. Now we are covering about 2.5 lakhs of population. The specific geographical areas have been entrusted to Six Field Workers (PMW), One Supervisor (NMS) and one Part-time Doctor.
